People employed in agriculture and horticulture

Here you can see the number of people employed in agriculture and horticulture broken down by types of employment. The ‘manager’ is the manager of a farm that is not a personally owned and run enterprise. This could be a farm owned by a company or run as a national test farm. ‘Family workers’ covers any of the farmer’s children, parents and siblings working at the farm.

Farm Structure Survey

The purpose of the survey is to describe the structure of agriculture, e.g. number of farms by size and geography.

The statistics have comparable time series going back to 1982. The agricultural statistics, however, are much older than that with figures for number of farms, livestock, crops etc. going back to around 1900.
