Denmark in Figures 2019
Denmark in Figures is no longer published, and the 2019-edition is the last one.
Denmark has 5.8 million inhabitants of which 1.7 million – or almost 30 per cent – live alone. The average life expectancy of the men is 79.0 years, whereas the average life expectancy of the women is 82.9 years. These are just some of the facts that you can find in Denmark in figures 2019.
The booklet is well suited for use in senior classes, e.g. in Social Science and Mathematics. It is the story of Mathilde and Lucas and all the other 15-year-olds in Denmark from a statistical perspective. Did you know that one in six 15-year-old Danes go to continuation school and two thirds live in single-family houses?
In this publication, you can also find facts such as:
- The highest point in Denmark is Møllehøj with its 171 metres, the biggest lake is Arresø with its 40 km2, and the longest river is the Gudenå stretching 176 km through Jutland, which - by the way - accounts for 69 per cent of the total area of the country.
- Our population has been growing in recent years. This is due partly to immigrants outnumbering emigrants, partly to births outnumbering deaths.
- The average home in Denmark is 112 m2, and each person has an average living space of 52.3 m2. Home ownership is 57 per cent.
- The share of persons aged 25 to 64 years with long-cycle education has grown from 6 per cent in 2000 to 12 per cent in 2018. In the same period, the share of the population with basic school as their highest level of completed education has dropped from 30 per cent to 18 per cent.
- The unemployment rate was in 2018 5.2 per cent for women and 5.0 per cent for men. The unemployment was lowest among the 45-54-year-olds (2.9 per cent) and highest among the 15-24-year-olds (11.0 per cent).
- From an international point-of-view, Denmark had a significant surplus on the balance of payments of 6.1 per cent of GDP in 2018 because our exports are worth more than our imports. In addition, we have a large return on net foreign assets. Our biggest trading partner is Germany followed by Sweden.

Denmark in Figures 2016
Denmark in Figures is a small booklet with lots of information on Denmark and the Danes.
It is a useful guide for tourists, foreign students and others who wish to get a quick overview of contemporary Danish society.
- Denmark is a small country consisting mostly of islands and ocean. Every Dane has an average of 1.5 feet of shoreline to enjoy. The highest point is Møllehøj with an altitude of 171 meters, the largest lake is Arresø with an area of 40 km2, and the longest river is Gudenåen, stretching 176 km through Jutland which, by the way, accounts for 69 per cent of the country's total area.
- The number of Danes has increased over the past few years, totalling 5.7 million Danes as of January 1st 2016. The population growth is largely due to immigration rather than emigration, but also because the birth rate is greater than the death rate. By the way, Danes account for 0.8 per thousand of the world's population.
- The Danish population has also become older than 25 years ago. At that time, one in five persons was over 60 years of age; today it is one in four. More than 1,000 Danes alive today have celebrated their 100th birthday. The number of retired persons has increased to over 1 million.
- The agening of the population could be attributed to the fact that the life-style of the Danes regarding smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and exercise has changed during the last decades. In general, the Danes now live a healthier life. In 1980, half the Danes were smokers, and today, less than a fifth of the population smokes. Danes eat less fatty foods and drink less alcohol than 35 years ago.
- The car is the preferred means of transport. Travel in cars accounted for 85 per cent of the total transport in Denmark. Volkswagen was the most popular car brand in 2015, followed by Peugeot and Toyota, measured in terms of newly registered vehicles.
Denmark in Figures is the English version of Danmark i tal.

Denmark in Figures 2014
A statistical snapshot of Denmark and the Danes
- Denmark is a small country consisting mostly of islands and water. Every Dane has about 1.5 feet of shoreline to enjoy. The highest point is Møllehøj by 171 meters, the largest lake is Arresø of 40 km2 and the longest river is Gudenåen, stretching 176 km through Jutland, which account, by the way, for 69 per cent of the country's total area.
- The number of Danes has increased over the past few years, totaling 5.6 million Danes on 1 January 2014. The population growth is due to more immigration than emigration, but also that the number of births is greater than the number of deaths. By the way, Danes make up for 0.8 per thousand of the world's population.
- The Danish population has also become older than 25 years ago. At that time, one in five persons was over 60 years, today it is one in four. This also shows the trend in life expectancy. In 2012, life expectancy was 78 years for men and 82 years for women. In the course of 10 years, life expectancy has increased by 3.4 years for men and 2.7 years for women.
- We are also older, when we marry. In 1971, 87 per cent of all 30-year-old women were married, although this is true of only 38 per cent as of today. A man is, on average, 35 years and a woman is 32 years old, when they marry for the first time. In 2012, the oldest bride was 92 years.
- The car is our preferred means of transport. Travel in cars accounted for 85 per cent of total Danish transportation. Volkswagen was the most popular car brand in 2013, followed by Ford and Toyota, measured in terms of newly registered vehicles.
An all-time record low in 2012: 167 people killed in road traffic accidents, compared with 1,213 people in 1971.
